A new group, “Monday Night Sisters in Faith” will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Second Mile Room.
A group for women, we will read sometimes, share, hear from amazing guests, the format will change but the care and for each other, our community and our spiritual lives remains constant.
For our first few gatherings we’ll read, “Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Loved” by Kate Bowler. It’s on Nook, Kindle and in the public library. Kate Bowler is a professor at Duke Divinity School, has researched the prosperity gospel churches for her dissertation and first book, and is living with Stage IV cancer. This memoir is a wonderful way for us to consider the themes of love, grace and suffering in our lives and in the world through the lens of humor and beauty.
A meditation on sense-making when there’s no sense to be made, on letting go when we can’t hold on, and on being unafraid even when we’re terrified. And it happens to be hilarious. Above all, though, this is a love letter to life, and it’s gorgeous.”—Lucy Kalanithi, MD, FACP, clinical assistant professor of medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine
“Everything happens for a reason.” The only thing worse than saying this is pretending that you know the reason. I’ve had hundreds of people tell me the reason for my cancer. Because of my sin. Because of my unfaithfulness. Because God is fair. Because God is unfair. Because of my aversion to Brussels sprouts. I mean, no one is short of reasons.
