With America’s Grow-a-Row, we help:
On select days, Morrow Church volunteers transport, in their own vehicles, fresh produce from AGAR’s storage facility at Peaceful Valley Orchards in Pittstown, to two free farmers markets in Newark. When you sign up you are committing to complete one delivery, but we’ll gratefully welcome more if you choose.
Deliveries are made mid-July to October, leaving Maplewood around 7 a.m. Two drivers are needed on each occasion — one for each market. As a driver, you’ll load produce (fresh corn, tomatoes, beans, peaches, etc.) into your vehicle, drive to your specified market and, in some cases, help market volunteers unload. We can arrange a helper to do this loading and unloading if you let us know in advance. Markets are child-friendly.
Saturday’s location will be determined, and a Thursday morning market at Essex Community College has been added.
Your participation helps link AGAR volunteer harvesting efforts to inner-city residents in need of fresh, healthy produce, helping combat chronic health issues like diabetes and obesity, often associated with food deserts and financial hardship.
America’s Grow-a-Row also needs help harvesting from fields or gleaning from private farms throughout the summer, weekdays, evenings or weekends.
Save the date for Saturday, Oct. 8 when the Morrow Church community will pick/glean apples at the America’s Grow-a-Row Farm in Pittstown. Details will be posted closer to the event.
In the meantime, email Sally Zeiner, Director of Programming at America’s Grow-a-Row, to be put on the picking list and to receive news of other upcoming events.
